Why do I need this medicine?
Codeine + Promethazine is used to temporarily relieve cough and upper respiratory symptoms associated with allergies or common cold.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Codeine + Promethazine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Try to take it at the same time each day.

Do not use a household teaspoon to measure out your prescribed dose. Ask your pharmacist for an appropriate measuring device and to provide you with instructions on how to measure the correct dose.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not take this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Codeine or Promethazine.

Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • lung or breathing problems e.g. asthma
  • fever associated with productive cough
as Codeine + Promethazine may not be suitable for you.

Do not give this medicine to children below 12 years old or to children below 18 years old who have undergone tonsillectomy (removal of tonsils) or adenoidectomy (removal of adenoid).

DO NOT take Codeine + Promethazine with medicines for pain, cold or allergy, nausea or vomiting, depression, mood disorder, and lung disease.  Please see the section “Can I take this with other medicines?” below for more information.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • bowel, intestine or stomach problems e.g. inflammation or blocked bowel, stomach ulcer
  • gall bladder disorder
  • inflammation of the pancreas
  • prostate problems e.g. enlarged prostate
  • urinary problems e.g. difficulty passing urine
  • Addison’s disease (disorder of the adrenal glands)
  • head injury or raised pressure in the skull
  • increased pressure in the eyes
  • blood disorders
  • kidney disease
  • liver disease
  • heart disease e.g. uncontrolled chest pain, heart attack
  • thyroid problems
  • myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness disorder)
  • Parkinson’s disease (a brain disease that affects movement)
  • epilepsy (fits or seizures)
  • delirium tremens (tremors, hallucination and disorientation caused by withdrawal from alcohol)
  • consume large amounts of alcohol or if you are a frequent drinker
  • drug abuse or drug dependence problems
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you are going for an operation or had a recent surgery, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking this medicine.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Codeine + Promethazine to an elderly. Elderly may be more sensitive to the side effects.

This medicine may cause sensitivity to light. Apply sunscreen when going outdoors and avoid direct or prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV lamps.

For as long as you are taking this medicine, routine monitoring of your condition (e.g. blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory and mental status) to check your body’s response to the medicine may be needed.
What side effects could I experience?
Codeine + Promethazine may cause drowsiness or some problems with your eyesight. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert or need to see clearly.

Other side effects may include any of the following: constipation, difficulty urinating, dry mouth, and stomach pain.

You may experience dizziness when getting up from a sitting or lying down position. This is common. It will help if you get up slowly from a sitting or lying position.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop taking this medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • breathing problems e.g. difficulty, slow, shallow, or noisy breathing
  • signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a neurological disorder) fever, muscle cramps or stiffness, confusion, sweating, changes) in pulse, heart rate or blood pressure
  • unusual changes in mood or behaviour
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I take this with other medicines?
Do not take Codeine + Promethazine with the following medicines:
  • medicines for pain e.g. hydrocodone, levorphanol, oxycodone, oxymorphone, orphenadrine
  • medicines for cold or allergy e.g. azelastine
  • medicine for nausea or vomiting e.g. bromopride, metoclopramide
  • medicines to treat depression e.g. bromperidol, dapoxetine
  • medicine for mood disorder e.g. levosulpiride
  • medicines for lung disease e.g. ipratropium, tiotropium
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • epinephrine (medicine used in emergency treatment of life-threatening allergic reactions)
  • medicine for Parkinson's disease e.g. selegiline
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Codeine + Promethazine.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
